Meet our new intern: Karen

Coming semester Karen Vet will be joining our team as the new intern. She has a BA in Middle Eastern Studies from Leiden University, specializing in Arabic language and culture.

In 2018 I had the pleasure to study at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo, which improved my Arabic as well as allowed me to get to know the city that is Cairo. Since then I have visited Cairo multiple times, which made me want to embark on a new challenge at the NVIC. I hope this internship will allow me to explore the city from a different perspective and to develop myself within the context of the institute and the Middle Eastern region. I am thankful for the possibilities that this internship at the NVIC will provide me with, with regards to the combining of work experience in Egypt with the improvement of my language and research skills. Furthermore, I am looking forward to exploring the organisational structure of the institute, learning from and sharing with the different members of the institute's team and seeing the students from Belgium and the Netherlands enjoy the education and the experience, like I once did myself.
I feel that "the thrilling and interesting life in Cairo" will be a great asset to my internship and hope that both my work for the institute and my private life in Cairo the coming months will further shape me as a researcher and person.
