3-8 December 2016 Workshop: "Islamic Studies in the West: An interdisciplinary perspective"

From the 3rd until the 8th of December, together with Dr Amr Ryad of Utrecht University our institute organized a workshop with students of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Azhar University. During this workshop, students had the opportunity to discuss their own research proposals with various specialists from Dutch and Egyptian universities.

The workshop brought together academics from Dutch universitites and Al-Azhar University to explore the current interdisciplinary features of Islamic Studies in the West. The programme sought to enhance dialogue between academic colleagues and young researchers by creating a forum where scholarly issues in the field of Islamic Studies, history and civilisation can be discussed.

The purpose of the workshop was to select a number of students to be sent to the Netherlands to execute their PhD research at the universities of Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leiden. The final selection of candidates is due to take place in January.

We are grateful to the Netherlands Embassy in Cairo, who have made this workshop and the scholarships possible through their generous support.
