As this world map reveals, our first-year students represent a whole bunch of different backgrounds and identities. Some of them currently living in The Hague, some of them elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad. How can we try and make use of the situation and create a community…online?

Under this rubric we want to report on our tutors’ international and intercultural experience. Leiden University strives to enable students to develop so called “21st century skills” which are defined as “the ability to work in teams, international and intercultural skills, entrepreneurship and leadership qualities and digital competences”.

The end of the semester and the dawning of a new year tend to inspire a certain level of contemplation. So far there has not been much time for that partly as a result of the unrest that has recently erupted around Zwarte Piet. In that context I would like to share some thoughts with you.

And justifiably so too – so much of what we do already in our social activity, ‘choices’ of entertainment, and business interactions are already shaped by algorithms.

We all have our own ways of trying to deal with the horrible situation that is evolving in Ukraine. A war, just a few borders away; for some of us even in our own country, with our own families suffering the consequences. We need to express our anger, fear, despair, and solidarity in ways that make sense for ourselves.

In March 2024, BASIS welcomed the South Korean NGO PSCORE for the first time at Leiden University, marking the beginning of a powerful tradition. Now in its second edition, this event brought together an array of students to hear moving testimonies from North Korean defectors and to deepen understanding of human rights challenges in the region.
