The Programme Board of International Studies is considering offering an extracurricular course in statistics (extracurricular meaning that students cannot follow it as part of the regular programme, but only as an additional course). To make an informed decision, we would like to take inventory of the number of students that would be interested in such a course. Below you can indicate whether you would be interested in taking a statistics course.
This year the Student Representatives on the International Studies Programme Board, Jitske Veenhoven and Mimi Hu, would like to offer you the opportunity to voice your wishes, complaints and questions in person. Come to a walk in hour!
Whoever has the illusion that engaging in an academic teaching position implies having the luxury of long vacations, should speak to the tutors of International Studies. As has been the case since the beginning of the Programme, the academic year starts quite early for us.
This month, not only 520 new students have arrived in The Hague to start their International Studies adventure, we also welcome four new tutors and five new tutor-lecturers. They are joining the team of now almost 40 tutors. In this article they will quickly introduce themselves and share their expectations of teaching at International Studies.
After an un-Dutch warm and dry summer, the start of the academic year seems to have been announced by the customary and in this case keenly anticipated rain. The end of summer always brings a moment of celebration and an opportunity for new beginnings. We ended another successful year for the programme with a very fine ceremony at which we celebrated the graduation of 357 students with many parents and friends present. It was also a new beginning for our more than 500 strong 2018 cohort of students. They will start a new phase in their lives, for about half of them in a new country, for most of them in a new city and for all of them with new challenges and opportunities provided by our programme.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our student Linda Heijker has unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, 30 August in Chennai, India. Linda was a third year student of International Studies, specializing in Russia and Eurasia. Her family tells us that the study was particularly important to her.
The students received their diplomas in the historic Pieterskerk in Leiden, in front of a large audience of family and friends. With more than 1,000 people present, including more than 300 graduates, this was the largest graduation ceremony of the programme since its founding in 2012. In a nearly four hour ceremony the various regions in which the students specialised were highlighted and each student was personally congratulated with obtaining their bachelor.
