Follow in the footsteps of the Pilgrim Fathers

As part of the conference's social programme, participants of ICEHL-21 have the opportunity to go on a walking tour related to the Pilgrim Fathers.

America’s Leiden Roots: The Pilgrims’ Twelve-Year Sojourn in Leiden, 1609-1620

2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to America. Of the one hundred English “Pilgrims” undertaking the 1620 voyage, fifty hailed from Leiden, the Netherlands, where they had lived as religious refugees since 1609.

Dr Joke Kardux will be taking a group of conference participants on a walk through Leiden, called: “America’s Leiden Roots: The Pilgrims’ Twelve-Year Sojourn in Leiden, 1609-1620”. Dr Kardux is the co-author of the book Newcomers in an Old City: The American Pilgrims in Leiden (4th edn., 2020).
