New student information

You’re about to join Leiden University as a study abroad or exchange student. Make sure you are well prepared and get your studies off to a good start!

To arrange before your studies

As a student of Leiden University you will be issued with a student account, known as a ULCN account. This gives you access to the university’s systems and work stations. You will receive your ULCN account details by email soon before arrival. Don’t forget to first activate your ULCN account, by following the instructions in the email.

Your LU card is your university ID card. It also serves as your library card, print/copy card and access pass for certain buildings. Make sure to request your LU card before starting your studies. To do so, log into Account Self Service with your ULCN account, go to ‘My profile’ and upload a passport photo, then request your LU card online.

Familiarise yourself with the study facilities

Your digital registration card is your proof of registration as a non-degree student at Leiden University. To use the digital registration card you will need the Leiden University app. The card will appear in the app within three days of the finalisation of your student registration. Don’t have the app yet? uSis is Leiden University’s online student registration system. In uSis you can find records of all the courses you have followed and the grades you have obtained at Leiden University. You can log into uSis using your ULCN account.

In the Prospectus you can find detailed information on your courses, for example the course syllabus, your lecturers, reading materials and methods of assessment.

As a student of Leiden University you will be issued with a university email address: uMail. You will receive your uMail details by email prior to arrival. All correspondence from the university will be sent to your uMail address so make sure to check it regularly.  You can set up your uMail account so that all mails will be forwarded to your own email address.

By joining an association you'll meet lots of people and get more out of student life. As well as student and study associations, there are also a range of social associations in Leiden and The Hague, for example sports, religious or cultural associations.
