CEDEJ and NVIC are pleased to invite you to the screening of "Saint Omer” (2022) by filmmaker Alice Diop, next Sunday at 6:30 PM.

Winner of the Silver Lion and the Venice Award for Best Debut Film at the Venice Film Festival, this extraordinary narrative by acclaimed documentarian Alice Diop chronicles how a young novelist is forced to confront her personal traumas while observing the trial of a woman accused of infanticide.

This screening is part of the program “I Want to Go Mad—Raving Mad”, on cinema and mental health, curated by Ali Hussein Al-Adawy, and supported by CEDEJ in collaboration with NVIC.

Young novelist Rama attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. But as the trial continues, the words of the accused and witness testimonies will shake Rama’s convictions and call into question our own judgement.

Alice Diop (b.1979) is a French filmmaker and screenwriter. After studying history and visual sociology at the Sorbonne, she began her career as a documentary filmmaker. Her short and medium length films were selected and awarded prizes in several festivals, include Les Sénégalaises Et La Sénégauloise (2007), La Mort De Danton (2011), La Permanence (2016) and Towards Tenderness (2016), which won the César for Best Short Film in 2017. Her feature length documentary We (2021) won the Best Documentary Award as well as Best Film in the Encounters section at the Berlin Film Festival in 2021. Her most recent film, Saint Omer, premiered in-competition at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize along with the Luigi De Laurentiis Lion of the Future award.

This screening is presented in collaboration with Front Row films.

تحضر الباحثة والروائية راما محاكمة لورانس كولي، وهي امرأة متهمة بقتل ابنتها البالغة من العمر 15 شهرًا. ومع تقدم الإجراءات القانونية، تبدأ كلمات المتهمة إلى جانب شهادات الشهود في زعزعة قناعات راما والتشكيك في حكمها وحكم المشاهد،حين يصبح الجنون طوقا للنجاة.

أليس ديوب (مواليد 1979) هي مخرجة وكاتبة سيناريو فرنسية. بعد دراسة التاريخ وعلم الاجتماع في السوربون، بدأت مسيرتها كمخرجة أفلام وثائقية. تم اختيار أفلامها القصيرة والطويلة المدى وحازت على جوائز في عدة مهرجانات، مثل فيلم "السنغاليّات والسنغالوّية" (2007)، و"موت دانتون" (2011)، و"الدوام" (2016)، و"نحو الرقة" (2016)، الذي فاز بجائزة السيزار لأفضل فيلم قصير في 2017. فاز فيلمها الوثائقي الطويل "نحن" (2021) بجائزة أفضل فيلم وثائقي وأفضل فيلم في قسم "اللقاءات" في مهرجان برلين السينمائي 2021. أما فيلمها الأخير، "سانت أومير"، فهو أول فيلم روائي طويل لها. عُرض الفيلم في المسابقة الرسمية في
مهرجان فينيسيا السينمائي الدولي الـ79، حيث فاز بجائزة الأسد الفضي لأفضل فيلم وجائزة "أسد المستقبل"
