Little Wars | A Tribute to Maroun Baghdadi

This December, NVICinema invites you to join us for a tribute to Lebanese filmmaker Maroun Baghdadi (1950–1993), marking 32 years since his passing. Join us this Sunday at 7pm for the opening screening: Little Wars.

Little Wars tells the story of Lebanon’s civil war in 1975 through three characters. Talal, son of a Feudal lord, returns to his region after the disappearance of his father to become a warlord himself. Soraya is in love with Talal and tries to help him by abducting a businessman. Finally, Nabil, a photojournalist who uses the war to trade drugs and tries to pose as a hero - but is in fact very far from being one. Little stories happening during little wars.

About the director

Maroun Baghdadi is widely regarded as one of Lebanon’s most influential filmmakers. His work looks closely at everyday life during the civil war, capturing the fragmentation, tenderness and uncertainty of a country in transition. Beirut Ya Beirut was described by ArteEast as “perhaps the first real masterpiece of Lebanese cinema,” and Little Wars premiered in the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, introducing his work internationally. He later collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, and in 1991, his feature Out of Life (Hors la Vie) received the Cannes Jury Prize - affirming his place in the history of Arab cinema. Throughout his career, he directed eight feature films, thirteen documentaries, numerous shorts and video works: a life of filmmaking compressed into too few years.
