Word from the Chair: November
We have reached the halfway mark of the first semester. Our first-year students are in the process of choosing their area and their language specialization. On 3 November we held our Area Fair and we can look back on a very successful event.

Not Stolen: A panel against polarisation
On Wednesday 29 November 2023, a panel was held on the controversial recent book of staff member Dr Jeff Fynn Paul, called Not Stolen: The truth about European Colonialism in the New World. Already before and right after its publication, the book was met with some criticism from within the Leiden academic community, as became clear from the article submitted by an anonymous student to BAISmag* (followed by Dr. Fynn Paul’s response**) as well as the initial postponement of the panel.

How students Alex and Rody got to meet Trudeau and Rutte
As you may have seen it on social media, on Friday 29 October, outgoing Prime Minister Rutte and Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada visited the University during a busy day in the Netherlands ahead of the G20 in Italy and the COP26 in Glasgow. Originally, this meeting was only meant for FGGA students, but we, as fellow humanities students had the honour to attend the dialogue in person as well. How did we end up there?
