Update from the Chair - Giles Scott-Smith

It’s been a demanding last three weeks. Suddenly, within one weekend, our university moved to interacting online. Meetings, classes, social gatherings, it’s all via a screen.

We’ve had to adjust very rapidly, both technically: downloading new software, deleting loads of files in order to bring our laptops up to speed, getting those microphones working (but remember to switch them off!) – and emotionally: staying put in our environments, reducing direct contact with others, being concerned about family, loved ones, friends, ourselves. It’s not easy. And we have several weeks to go. ‘Normal life’ is still quite far away.

In these extraordinary, demanding circumstances, everyone is giving 200%. I’d like to thank my International Studies colleagues for adapting so fast to these new demands and for rising to the challenge of completing this semester in an adapted form. I know some of my colleagues are juggling home care and home schooling with online class schedules and the grading of assignments. There have been many questions over the past couple of weeks, how to change this, how to react to that. All justified. We have been doing our best to respond as quickly as we can, as sensibly as we can, so that you all know where you stand and what is required. And we will continue to do so. I am proud of everyone’s investment and how our programme is continuing in such a professional way.

I encourage our students to stick with it, stay in touch, and share your concerns. Don’t get isolated. Sometimes, understandably, you might think that your studies are no longer important, or you find it difficult to concentrate. We understand. Rest assured that we will help you out as best we can, whenever we can. We are in this together. For those of you in your first and second years, keep hold of your plans and ambitions, and don’t lose sight of your goals. You will get there. For those aiming to graduate this summer, we will do our best to get you to the finishing line. And graduation later will be one serious party.

We are living through a seminal period at the moment. Only in world wars has global life been so affected at the same time everywhere by the same phenomenon. The strain on our political systems, businesses and societies is showing daily. But it is temporary, and it will, if we play it right, cause a new appreciation of everything, from how we run our friendships to how we run our economies. Good can come out of this, even if it’s hard to see right now. Let’s hold on to that thought.
