Gorlaeus Bicycle Storage
A part of the steel construction of the former Gorlaeus high-rise forms the basis of a new green bike park which is part of the redevelopment of the Faculty of Science.
A new bicycle storage in the remnants of former Gorlaeus high-rise lab
The lower stories of the old Gorlaeus high-rise were saved from demolition. They are turned into a new, green bicycle storage to accommodate more than 3.000 bikes. The bike storage is located on the ground floor. On the first floor, a pleasant rooftop garden has been created. Part of the old steel construction has turned into a plant-clad pergola.
Input ecology students
The Leidse Biologen Club’s rooftop garden committee was involved in the design of the garden. The students mostly had a background in biology or ecology, which meant there was a strong level of subject-specific input. It was decided to align the design with the surrounding ecosystems in order to strengthen the ecological network. The garden is also maintained by the rooftop garden committee.
