Gorlaeus Bicycle Storage

Currently, the construction is underway for a large, covered bicycle parking facility with space for nearly 3000 bicycles. In the summer of 2024, the Gorlaeus bicycle parking will be ready for use.

Recycled steel

The bicycle parking will be located where the Gorlaeus High-rise laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences used to stand. During the demolition of this building, the lower steel structure was preserved to form the basis of this new facility. This way, all this steel gets a beautiful and sustainable second life.

Plenty of space for greenery and relaxation

On the ground floor level, there will be bicycle parking spaces, and on the first floor, there will be an inviting rooftop garden with seating and a variety of plants. Multiple areas will feature climbing plants along the steel structure, with hammocks, picnic tables, rocking chairs, and grass on one side, and edible crops, perennial plants, and shrubs on the other. Adjacent to this, there will be a bee and butterfly garden. All these plants provide a sense of refuge and protection throughout the seasons.

Input ecology students

In the design of the gardens, the student club IBL has been involved. Many of the students had a background in biology or ecology, contributing significantly to the content. It was decided to align with the ecosystems in the surrounding area to strengthen the ecological main structure. The students will also be responsible for maintaining the garden.
