About the Teacher of the Year Award
Each year, the Faculty of Science celebrates exceptional teaching with its annual award. Here you’ll find how the tradition began, how the winner is chosen, and where to explore the lecturers who have earned the title in previous years.
History of the award
Since 2000, the Faculty of Science has presented annual teaching awards to recognise outstanding lecturers. In the early years, each bachelor’s programme selected its own winner: students from the programme’s education committee chose one teacher who received a €500 prize for educational purposes.
In 2007, the procedure was updated. The education committees still nominate one teacher per programme, but since then a faculty-wide jury selects a single overall winner — the Teacher of the Year.
How we chose the winner
The jury consists of the chairpersons of the study associations and the assessor from the Faculty Board. During the selection process, students from each education committee advocate for their nominee through a short presentation. When the competition is particularly close, the jury may attend one or more lectures to reach a final decision.
