About the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Awards

The awards honour Krijn Rietveld’s vision of science that creates real-world impact. Explore how the programme evolved, how the awards are structured today, and the values that continue to inspire researchers across disciplines.

History of the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Awards

In honour of Krijn Rietveld (1956–2018), the Leiden University Fund and dsm-firmenich established the Krijn Rietveld Memorial Awards to celebrate researchers who create impact beyond scientific discovery in life sciences, health sciences, biotech, or environmental health sciences with a data science component. The first annual Krijn Rietveld Innovation Award was presented in 2020 to recognise innovative research contributing to a more sustainable world. After four editions, the award was restructured in 2024: it is now split into two annual awards for master graduates and PhD/postdocs, and a biennial Business Development Grant for promising entrepreneurial projects by early-career researchers.

Krijn Rietveld obtained his PhD in Leiden. The awards are named after him.
