Open Science Week 2025
The traditional form of scholarly communication has changed very little over the centuries that academic journals have existed. Even the transition to the Digital Age has done very little to revolutionise how we communicate our results across the globe, and has largely served to reduce the costs of the publishing industry and increase profits.
Now we can communicate with almost anyone, anywhere, immediately, yet it can take months (even years, in extreme cases) to communicate our research findings to our peers. The current system is also opaque, rigid, over-values the journal article, causes reviewer fatigue, is highly biased and inequitable, and represents a complete lack of innovation and imagination. Other options already exist but are experiencing a slow adoption, especially in archaeology, despite the wide range of activities in our research lending themselves well to more modular outputs that better reflect the research process.
This event aims to highlight other publishing channels with short pitches from a range of platforms offering publishing models that address common issues of the traditional platforms. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities of these platforms with a panel of archaeologists and publishing experts.
