Being Each Other's Middlemen: Weaving the Open Science Network

The open science movement strongly depends on our ability to communicate and coordinate on a scale that is infeasible to orchestrate in any centralized manner. Instead, it operates on a network of individuals and organizations that loosely connects the community. However, the network of the open movement is currently highly fragmented into mostly centralized walled gardens. In this talk, I will explain how decentralized networks work and why we need to incentivise connections between different organizations for collective action and self-organization. We will look at some of the community initiatives like Open Knowledge Network and technological tools like Activity Pub being offered to connect these walled gardens in a decentralized manner. Finally, we will discuss some methods and mechanisms we can introduce to strengthen the open science network.
