A Comparative Analysis Between Open Sources and the Elsevier Data Monitor
A notable increase has been observed in recent years concerning the number of datasets that are both deposited and subsequently published by researchers from Leiden University. As a result, the practice of monitoring datasets has similarly gained traction, with the usage of monitoring tools becoming progressively prevalent within an institutional context. This presentation will focus on a comparative analysis between open data sources (specifically Crossref, DataCite and OpenAlex) and proprietary sources (the Elsevier Data Monitor), and will delve into the possibilities and limitations inherent in each data source, culminating in an evaluation of their applicability and relevance for the needs of Leiden University. This project was conducted as part of an internship program facilitated through the collaboration between the Centre for Science and Technology Studies and the Centre for Digital Scholarship.
