New Gorlaeus Building
Do's and don'ts
As we are about to move to the new Science Campus, we would like you to revisit some of the dos and don'ts regarding our new accommodation. We have lived with some of them for years, but there are some new ones, too.
Bulletin Boards
Posters, flyers, and sheets of A4 advertising all sorts of activities are to be found all over our buildings. Unfortunately, they are not only posted on the bulletin boards that were installed for this specific purpose. To avoid random posting, bulletin boards will be installed at strategic points in our new housing. Please keep in mind, all walls are painted: they will be irreparably damaged when anything is stuck to them.
Coffee corners
Since 2008, strict policies have been in place concerning the use of coffee and/or tea making appliances, microwave ovens, etc. at our workplaces. Blind eyes were turned on this practice because there were never enough pantries in the old building. However, things will be different in our new accommodation. There is an adequate number of pantries, which will all be provided with faculty-purchased coffee and/or tea making appliances, and in some cases even a microwave. These amenities are no longer allowed in your rooms. Any such appliances will be removed. It is recommended that you take home or dispose of anything of this nature.
Atrium
On the ground floor, a second service desk will be realised shortly, where you will be able to ask any service related questions. A large number of lounge areas, lounge seats and desks for independent study will be placed in the Atrium area. Bringing your own furniture into the Atrium will not be allowed.
Lockers
There is a large number of lockers in the Atrium that can be operated by your LU card. The use of these lockers is free of charge. All lockers are released daily at midnight to prevent prolonged use by a single person.
Lifts
Lifts are operated with a valid LU card. The goods lift is meant for specific transports (e.g. chemicals), not for persons. Dangerous transports always take precedence. A special key switch is provided to operate the lift through priority switching.
Access
During this phase, the Science Campus lacks a separate entrance/exit. During the second phase, a central entrance will be provided. Until then, access is only available through the LMUY connecting passageway or the parking garage. There will be no access through the new logistics centre.
Bicycle and car parking
There are no changes in parking facilities. Everyone with parking privileges to Gorlaeus/Huygens-Oort will automatically be given access to the parking garage. You can enter the building through the revolving doors in the parking garage. Outside normal opening hours, you will need to register your entry and exit here as well. After closing the maintenance corridor through the Gorlaeus building, the bicycle entrance will be moved to the Huygens reception. The bicycle park will also be enlarged then.
Visitors
After closure of the maintenance corridor in connection with the demolition of the Gorlaeus Building, the Huygens reception area will function temporarily as main entrance to the Science Campus for visitors and students. For this purpose, the bridge over the cooling pond will be made weathertight, and the Huygens reception area will be modified. Effective signage to the Science Campus will be provided for visitors. All entrance doors to the wings will be secured, so you will have to pick up your visitors in the Atrium. The LMUY sluice or the coffee corner on the first floor can be your meeting point.
Temperature Control
Use the thermostat to control the temperature in your offices. The windows may be opened to let in fresh air.
Waste
Waste and paper containers will be placed on every floor, so there will always be one close to you. You are responsible for the disposal of your waste. Any waste left by the door or in the corridor will not be collected. If you have a large amount of waste or waste of a specific nature, you may inform the Service Desk in the usual way, after which it will be disposed of.
Mounting whiteboards and artwork
Almost all walls have melamine plating, which makes drilling impossible. It is strictly forbidden! Special sets are available at the Service Desk to enable you to mount your whiteboards and artwork. Special coat racks are also available that can be wall-mounted without drilling.
