Positions
Leiden University and the Graduate School of Science offer different types of PhD positions.
Paid positions
The Faculty of Science has paid PhD-positions available, which are filled on a merit basis. A salary is granted in conformity with the Collective Labor agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. PhD candidates can directly apply for available PhD research projects. Talented, highly motivated candidates are offered Institutional PhD positions, in which the candidate starts training by attending advanced courses and a nearer acquaintance with the research of the institute before choosing a research project and supervisor.
Self obtained grants
It may also be possible to enter the PhD Programme with self-obtained grants. Grants must provide for costs of living and for bench fee. More information on posible grants and scholarships.
For Chinese and Indonesian PhD Candidates
Students from China and Indonesia are eligible for PhD scholarships offered by their respective governments. These scholarships provide funding for PhD proposals based on a separate application process. The proposals listed below are proposals for which funding is yet to be established. Based on admission for the PhD Programme, funding will need to be requested from (for instance) the CSC (China) or LPDP (Indonesia). You can find a description of the process on our website.
