Replications
The replication crisis made us aware of the fact that our knowledge unfortunately often relies on experimental results that are not robust. Reliable exact or conceptual replication studies can be a constructive way to solidify the basis of our knowledge. At LUCL we do this by actively participating in ManyBabies studies (manybabies.org) and by performing pre-registered replication studies in psycholinguistics, phonetics and neurolinguistics. Pre-registered replication results can also be used in meta-analytic synthesis of the literature because they yield effect sizes that are not biased by publication bias.
Meta-analyses
Ultimately, research questions can only be answered with relative confidence by considering the full body of literature that is relevant to that research question. Meta-analysis is a collection of statistical methods that allows for quantitative synthesis of the previous literature while correcting for publication bias. At LUCL we therefore use meta-analysis to quantitatively summarize the previous literature in psycho- and neurolinguistics.
