This year all the raised money will be donated to the Scholars at Risk program of UAF, the Foundation for Refugee Students.
Scholars at Risk: protecting academic freedom
In too many countries, those seeking power and control are working to limit access to information and new ideas by targeting scholars, restricting academic freedom and repressing research, publication and learning. Everyday scholars are threatened and killed. Colleges and universities are pressured and shut down.
That is why the raised money from the Leiden Science Run 2019 is going to Scholars at Risk, the UAF program that offers threatened scientists a temporary opportunity to continue their research in a safe academic environment.
If the situation in the country of origin is safe, the scientists will return. If the return is not an option, the UAF will look with the scientists for alternative options for continuing work abroad. The UAF currently supervises 30 scientists, of which most are from Syria and Turkey. Three scientists are working at Leiden University.

Foundation for Refugee Students UAF
The UAF has been providing support to refugee students and professionals in their studies and in finding suitable employment on the Dutch labour market since 1948. We are convinced that anyone who can use their knowledge can make a meaningful contribution to Dutch society. That is why we make such an effort to assist them. We advise refugees based on our knowledge and experience and build bridges between refugees, educational institutions, (local) governments and employer.
