Speed date between International Studies’ students and alumni a fruitful success

It was a diverse crowd of around 45 people that gathered on 28 February to attend the ‘career speed date’ event between current and former students of the BA International Studies. The informal event, set-up in a room of the parliamentary press center Nieuwspoort, meant to provide students with some insights ‘from the field’ into professional life after International Studies.

The importance of extra-curricular activities

That students had questions to ask, became quite clear when the speed dating rounds started. Alumni were bombarded with questions about internships, masters, jobs, and networking, which they enthusiastically answered as well as they could. The main take-away from the meetings was that all alumni stressed The importance of extra-curricular activities for gaining professional experience and expanding your professional network. Especially for International Studies students, the need to develop yourself outside your regular study programme, is crucial for professional success.

With 90 minutes of speed dating over in a heartbeat, talks continued energetically during the ‘borrel’ in the Nieuwspoort Café. The fact that the café was still full when the infamous ‘last round’ was being called and that drinks continued on Plein, perhaps proved the event was not only of professional, but also of social benefit.
