Event Description
The event aims to stimulate a conversation about the goals, methods, and challenges of writing Global History, in both conceptual and practical terms. It offers an occasion to discuss current research projects of Global History, to gain insights into the latest developments in the field, share knowledge, and engage with fellow researchers at different stages of their career, in and across relevant disciplines.
To initiate the discussion, Professor Penslar was invited to present his book project “The War for Palestine, 1947-1949: A Global History”. The war has been studied extensively from military, diplomatic, and recently also social historical perspectives. Penslar’s move to place it in its global context decenters the regional war, working to reframe our understanding of the emergence of the Palestine Question. In studying how elite actors and public opinion perceived the war and its significance, at the time and across the globe, the study examines how the notion of the war as a seminal event that foreclosed negotiated solutions to the Palestine Question took root.
Programme
The presentation will be followed up by a Q&A session. After a lunch break, discussion will open up to participants’ reflections and comments about their practice of global history writing, what this approach promises by way of insights, and the challenges of interweaving diverse narratives into Global Histories, written for a general public or specialized academic audiences.
