The Objective and Current Policy

The foundation aims to promote knowledge of chemistry. Its policy is focused on achieving this objective by inviting internationally renowned scientists in the field of chemistry, in consultation with the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The current policy is long-term policy. It has not been changed in the past 20 years and remains in force until further notice. The Havinga Medal has meanwhile become a well-known concept within the international community of chemistry researchers and belongs to the tradition of this scientific field. The Way in Which the Institution Seeks to Raise Funds

The foundation possesses its own resources thanks to the Havinga legacy. The foundation uses these resources, and part of the policy for the coming five years will be to initiate additional fundraising efforts.

The Way in Which the Institution Will Manage Funds and Assets

The foundation's assets are held with ABN AMRO Leiden. The bank reports annually on the accounts. Management of the assets occurs on the advice of the investment department. These recommendations are either adopted or rejected by the board of the foundation. Implementation of the management lies with the treasurer of the foundation. In the absence of the treasurer, the chairman assumes this role.

The Way in Which the Institution Will Spend Funds and Assets

The funds are used to award the Havinga Medal to renowned international scientists in the field of chemistry. Selection is determined by the board of the foundation. Board members perform their duties without remuneration. The prize winner visits universities in the Netherlands at the expense of the foundation who are active in the laureate's field of study. In this way, new international developments are brought to the attention of the Dutch academic community. This is in the spirit of the testament of the late Professor Egbert Havinga, who designated part of his inheritance for this purpose. It should be noted that the fund was originally a gift from his former doctoral students upon his retirement.
