Krijn Rietveld Awards - call for nominations

On this page, you can find everything you need to know about the upcoming Krijn Rietveld Memorial Awards: who is eligible, how to submit a nomination, key dates, and how candidates are selected.

The call for 2025 nominations closed on Tuesday, 20 May 2025. Information about the 2026 round will be announced here once available.

Submitting a nomination

Eligibility criteria

Krijn Rietveld Graduate Societal Impact Award

To be nominated, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Have received a master’s degree from Leiden University’s Faculty of Science no more than three years ago.

  • Conducted the research described in a master thesis as part of their recently completed programme.

  • Research is in life sciences, (environmental) health science or biotech, aiming to improve human health or wellbeing.

  • Includes a data science component, such as advanced data analysis or AI development/application.

  • Demonstrates high societal relevance—not only through the topic, but also through the candidate’s own efforts, including practical applications, policy influence, or other benefits to society (including, but not limited to, economic impact).

Krijn Rietveld Doctoral Societal Impact Award

To be nominated, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • You are a current or recent (up to 3 years ago) PhD student at Leiden University’s Faculty of Science, or a postdoctoral researcher who received your PhD no longer than 3 years ago.

  • Your research has resulted in a first-author article accepted for publication in a scientific journal.

  • All other eligibility criteria are the same as for the Graduate Societal Impact Award.

Nomination process

Each year, all eight institutes of Leiden University’s Faculty of Science may nominate two candidates per award. The Educational Director of each institute can nominate two master’s graduates for the Krijn Rietveld Graduate Societal Impact Award. The Scientific Director can nominate two candidates for the Krijn Rietveld Doctoral Societal Impact Award.

Do you think you're a good candidate?

If you are eligible and would like to be considered for one of this year’s awards, please ask your supervisor or promotor whether they are willing to support your nomination. If they agree, complete the application form together. Your supervisor or promotor can then forward the form to the Educational or Scientific Director of your institute so that your nomination will be taken into consideration.

Assessment and selection

A single assessment committee will review all nominations and select the winners for both awards. A representative from dsm-firmenich chairs the committee. Furthermore, the committee includes representatives from Leiden University’s Knowledge Exchange Office Luris, the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), and the Faculty Office of the Faculty of Science.

The jury will evaluate all nominations equally based on the following criteria:

  • Scientific quality

  • Societal impact

  • Interdisciplinarity

Award ceremony

The winners will be invited to receive their award in person at the awards ceremony during the Faculty Opening of the Academic Year. Afterwards, there will be a reception (borrel) for all students and staff of the Faculty.
