Studentenervaringen

“During the first year of my studies, I lived in a studio. While living there, I figured out I’d rather live with roommates. So, I started attending typical Dutch group viewings of student houses, referred to as ‘hospiteren’, in which you motivate your application to the current roommates. I already had some demands on forehand, such as that I wanted to live in a house with at least four roommates and at the very most ten roommates. I only wrote to them that I thought that we would be a good match. 🏠
In total, I had to go through eight applications, before I ended up in ‘Casa Castello’, where I’m still living. I live together with six roommates and I really like it here. We all do our own things, but there’s always room to have a chat. Every Wednesday we have ‘house nights’, some weeks this escalates into a party and other weeks we just watch TV on the couch. 🍺📺
My advice for students who are looking for a room would be: search for accommodation that really suits you. Do you love to be on your own? Find yourself a studio! Do you rather want to live with roommates? Find yourself roommates that you really connect with. Do you for example like to eat together every night? Find yourself roommates who love to do this as well. When you live together, you really live in each other’s pockets, so it’s important to be on the same page.” :)

Odette
‘I’ve been living here for three years and already had three different rooms!’ 🏡
Odette (22) is studying psychology and lives in a student house in Leiden, named ‘Huize Waltzing Mathilda’ after the Australian national anthem. She really enjoys living in a student house and will tell you about her experiences. If you have any questions for Odette, please ask them in the comments! 👇🏼
“Before I moved in, a friend of mine, whom I knew from high school, already lived here. She introduced me to her roommates and we immediately got along. I’m now already living here for three years and I’ve had three different rooms. The longer you live here, the better your room gets.
I live together with 17 roommates. Especially now, during these corona times, it’s really nice to still have social contacts. On the other hand, because we’re living in each others’ pockets, there are also quite a few irritations. It’s actually very similar to a brother-sister relationship; we can love and hate each other at the same time. 😅
Our house loves to do things together. We cook together a lot, play games together, watch movies on our projector. Besides that, we celebrate holidays and birthdays and organise a house weekend every year. During the summer we also love to spend time on our rooftop. It stays warm until very late in the evening and from up there, you’ve got a breathtaking view over the Hooglandse Kerk.”✨
Next year, a lot of students will be looking for a room again. What is the best tip you can give them?
