Tercer Seminario "Arqueología, Antropología e Historia en el espacio del primer encuentro colonial en Las Americas"

Today, on the 16th of November, El Aréa de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades and the Grupo de Investigación Arqueología y Cultures del Caribe from INTEC (Santo Domingo) are organizing the third seminar "Arqueología, Antropología e Historia en el espacio del primer encuentro colonial en Las Américas". At this seminar, the new book by Roberto Valcárcel Rojas and Jorge Ulloa Hung, entitled 'De La Desaparición A La Permanencia. Indígenas e indios en la reinvención del Caribe', will also be presented.

This seminar focusses on the archaeological, anthropological, and historical research results of the Nexus 1492 project in the Dominican Republic and beyond, with a particular emphasis on the cooperation of INTEC. By doing so, it will provide a richer and more complex reflection of the first cultural and social encounter between the Caribbean and the rest of the world from 1492 onwards.

It furthermore aims to show the diversity of situations, spaces, and interaction processes that took place before, during, and after 1492. This perspective will shed new light on the understanding of socio-cultural phenomena that have special significance in contemporary Caribbean and European spaces, and will provide an alternative vision of the links that united and unite the Caribbean with the rest of the world. This vision contributes to transcending traditional historical discourses, especially those based on Eurocentric perspectives that consciously or unconsciously exalt coloniality in the formation of Dominican society and Caribbean societies in general, and that conceive of the total extermination and cultural disappearance of the indigenous communities of the Caribbean or ignore the role of other ethnic groups in the colonial and present universe.

Topics that will be addressed in this seminar include:

  • recent archaeological research in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean (discovery of new archaeological sites);
  • studies of archaeological collections (exchange of material culture between Indians and Europeans in Columbus' time);
  • indigenous traditions and legacy in Dominican and Caribbean culture;
  • research and conservation of colonial monuments;
  • anthropology and disaster management and
  • contemporary art and indigenous legacy, among others.
