Film No 1: La Ruta de Colón – Historic Importance and Heritage

After the first short introductory film on the excavations of El Flaco in 2014, this new film tries to connect two main topics of Nexus1492: firstly the perception of the local Dominicans who participated in the excavations of El Flaco on their connection with the indigenous heritage, and who I interviewed at the site in July 2015.

This is tied into another aspect, the regional connection of the site with the surrounding landscape, explained by Dr. Jorge Ulloa Hung from the Museo del Hombre Dominicano. Together we visited indigenous archaeological sites in the region that Jorge had recently identified, and captured drone footage to better understand and delimit the sites. Following the idea of creating a film out of the collected footage, I asked Jorge to explain the historic importance of this particular landscape, which is directly associated with the Ruta de Colón, the gate of entry for the Spaniards to Hispaniola, and very early interaction of the Europeans with the Amerindian population.
