Enhancing collaborations at the 2016 NEXUS1492 Team Meeting

From 8 to 10 November, NEXUS1492 researchers met and participated in workshops and hackathons to further collaborations between project partners. Over the span of 2 days, several parallel small-group sessions were organized, where the 20 participants developed ideas and plans for transdisciplinary collaboration within the NEXUS programme. On the second day, a public lecture by archaeologist dr. Stefan Hauser was hosted by Konstanz University. Prof. Dr. Hauser discussed Trading in Palmyra: Past, Present and Future.

Themes and Projects Discussed

Themes and projects discussed during the meeting included: Caribe attacks on the colonial powers in the Lesser Antilles, Hacking pottery classifications and developing new ceramics databases, Visually mapping Caribbean museums using algorithms, Applying statistics to partial data on archaeological settlements in Montecristi, and Creating clusters of provenance data of jadetite artifacts from the Caribbean.

On the last day, the full group came together to share projects and directions. “Problem solving together was really helpful. The collaboration has enabled me to look at my data in a different way, and I look forward to doing further research”, says PhD student Csilla Ariese. PhD student Mereke van Garderen adds: “I think we can be very happy with the results of two days”. Over the next few months, we will share the progress of the exciting projects developed during this meeting.
