El Flaco 2016: A students’ perspective.

A film by students participating in the 2016 Fieldwork campaign in the Dominican Republic (video edited by Emma de Mooij).

In the months May till July of 2016, several students participated in ongoing excavations at El Flaco and El Carrill, in the Dominican Republic. Both sites are situated along the Ruta de Colón and contributes to our understanding of indigenous cultures and societies as well as of the lifeways and deathways of the peoples who inhabited this part of the Americas on the eve of the arrival of the Europeans.

This short video documentary is seen from the students’ perspective. Shot and created by several students, this video demonstrates their experiences during the fieldwork campaign of 2016, what they have been up to and what participating in a field internship of the Nexus1492 Project entails. Students’ fieldwork activities encompass a variety of activities, from excavating burials, to sieving soil in search of finds, to working with the Robotic Total Station. Labwork entailed getting a lot of practice and education in the area of material analyses with a wide variety of materials recovered from the field.

This video documentary was shot using several phone and gopro camera’s. For the aerial shots one of the students was able to practice taking pictures and filming using a drone.
