Caribbean Collections Abroad: Museums, History, and Politics at SAA

Mariana Francozo (NEXUS 1492) and Paola Schiappacasse (University of Puerto Rico) organised a panel at the Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Orlando, Florida on 8 April 2016. The contributions dealt with the various dimensions (ethical, legal, historical) of Caribbean cultural objects housed in museums in the US and Europe.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Caribbean Collections

This was an initial attempt at an interdisciplinary inquiry into these collections, into their historiography and legal status, thereby paving the way for further research into this field.

The panel was attended by scholars and museum professionals from institutions in the Caribbean, Europe and the US, many of whom expressed their interest in continuing this important conversation in the near future. Participants included NEXUS 1492 researchers Amy Strecker and André Delpuech (Musée du Quai Banly, Paris), as well as Yasha Rodriguez (Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico).
