EAA 23rd annual meeting

Date
Wednesday 30 August 2017 - Saturday 2 September 2017
Address
MECC

Maastricht

The EAA board, the municipality of Maastricht, the province of Limburg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are delighted to welcome you at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (August 30th – September 2nd, 2017) in the historic town of Maastricht.

This is where twenty five years ago, on February 7th, 1992, the famous Maastricht Treaty was signed. The long term effects on archaeology of both the Maastricht Treaty and the Valetta Convention, also agreed upon in 1992, will be discussed at the meeting.

In the light of the current political and social situation in Europe, and its effects on science, it was obvious to choose Maastricht’s most important landmark, the Saint Servatius Bridge (Aw Brök, or Old Bridge, in local dialect), as the meeting’s logo. The conference venue, MECC, offers perfect facilities for professional contacts and meeting friends. To stimulate discussion and dialogue, the Maastricht meeting will allow for experimentation in the session formats.

Some sessions will be organised by researchers within, or affiliated to the Nexus1492 Project:
Session #150: Island Networks: Analytical and Conceptual Advances in the Archaeological Study of Intra- and Inter-Island Relationships.
Session #297: Archaeology in a changing climate.
Session #310: Scientific approaches to the study of ornaments: from the archaeologist’s toolkit to body adornment in the past.
Session #363: Funerary archaeology: new developments in burial taphonomy and archaeothanatology.
Session #380: The archaeology of European colonialism: towards a politically situated research agenda.
