Course evaluations are familiar to all of us. At the end of every course, teachers ask students to evaluate their experience and offer feedback. Sometimes this is helpful: students can indicate whether a course is too fast or too slow, which topics they liked most, and what helped or didn't help them in their learning. Sometimes it is not: many comments are useless at best, and mean at worst. Standarised questions on a 5-point scale can be informative, but the results are often just a list of uninterpretable numbers.
In this Interfaculty Lunch, we will come together to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of course evaluations. Mario de Jonge (University Lecturer at ICLON) will present his research on alternatives to standard evaluation forms. In addition to being an informative afternoon, this is also an occassion to meet (young) academics at other faculties. Everyone is welcome - and there will be a free lunch!
Mario de Jonge (ICLON)
Mario de Jonge is Assistant Professor at ICLON, Leiden University. His research focuses on applying principles from the field of cognitive psychology to improve learning, metacognition, and long-term retention. His current research interests also include the evaluation of teaching in higher education and, more recently, the impact of generative AI on student learning.
In this lunch talk, Mario will discuss the (non)sense of traditional Likert-scale teaching evaluations and present some promising experimental alternatives that aim to provide more meaningful feedback while supporting teacher development and agency.
