Biography

Koen van der Maaden studied pharmacy at Utrecht University (2004-2008; Bachelor) and bio-pharmaceutical sciences at Leiden University (2008-2010; Master). After obtaining his Master’s degree with honors (cum laude) he enrolled into the PhD program of Leiden University under the supervision of prof dr Joke Bouwstra and prof dr Wim Jiskoot. During his PhD project he focused on microneedle-based intradermal vaccine delivery systems for minimally-invasive and pain-free vaccination. This work resulted in 9 first-author papers and two patent applications. He defended his thesis, entitled “Microneedle-mediated vaccine delivery”, in 2014 and obtained his PhD degree with honors (cum laude).  He received the C.J. Kok prize for best dissertation of the year 2015 of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University. After his PhD he worked for one year for MyLife Technologies at IntraVacc on vaccine delivery via nanoporous microneedles. Since 2015 he works 20% at MyLife Technologies and 80% at Leiden University.
