KNAW symposium on plastic pollution of the oceans

On 27 November 2019, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen) organized a symposium on the plastic pollution crisis.

The symposium mainly focused on plastics in the ocean and in particular the effects of such plastics. Where does plastic come from? Where does it end up? What is the effect on the aquatic environment and what can we humans effectively do to solve this? Several experts tried to cover these questions. Four scientists presented their views on the current plastic soup (or plastic ‘bouillon’/’broth’ as Professor Erik van Sebille called it) and the risks associated with it, which triggered a heated debate and even some emotional responses in the audience. The meeting was attended by LAPP student Lineke Schrijver and Esther Kentin, project leader.
