First stakeholders meeting on microplastic fibers from textile

On 17 October 2019, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management organised a first stakeholders meeting on microfibers from textile in the LEF Future Center. The meeting was prompted by a report of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in April of this year.

More than 40 stakeholder representatives were invited, making up a broad representation of parties involved with textiles and microplastics.

The meeting aimed at exploring methods and measures to prevent microfibers from textile entering into the environment. The report of RIVM, published in April, provides an overview of the issue of microplastic fibres and the parties in supply chain sector, and also lists possible measures. The unconventional approach at the LEF Future Center created a pleasant atmosphere, enabling dialogue and discussion of possible measures. Participants agreed that no regret measures should be taken while research should explore innovative solutions. A follow up has been promised in the near future. Esther Kentin was present on behalf of the Leiden Advocacy Project on Plastic.
