Despite the persistent worrisome signals coming from Ukraine, it recently emerged that back room talks are taking place between Russia and the United States. There is reason for hope. While the policy trope ‘we do not talk to war criminals or terrorists’ is understandable, conflicts attain resolution at the negotiating table.
On Thursday 3 November, International Studies organized an informal award ceremony of the so-called ‘propaedeutic diplomas’, or first year diplomas. About 210 students came to receive their diploma and celebrate their success with a drink.
The goal of alumnus International Studies Dennis Jansen (24) is to make the voice of young people heard in the climate debate. In November he is going to el-Sheikh in Egypt, where the Climate Change Conference is being held.

The bachelor's programme in International Studies is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Ko Voskuilen was among the very first batch of students to follow the study, and Sophia Healy graduated this summer. How do they look back on their time at the university?
In their first semester, International Studies students choose one of the 8 areas that the programme offers, with an accompanying language. Which factors play a role in their decision? A student survey amongst first year students in April 2022 gave interesting insights into the mechanisms at play.
On 2 September 2022, 300 students received their Bachelor Diploma of International Studies. The students were awarded their diplomas in the historic Pieterskerk in Leiden, in front of a large audience of family and friends. With about 1000 people present, including the graduates, the International Studies Graduation Ceremony went ‘back to normal’ after two years of Corona restrictions.
