Social inequality of health

This focus area adresses the social context of health and well-being, with a particular emphasis on social inequality.

We have extensive expertise in the field of cultural, political and social factors, structures and institutions that reinforce inequalities in health and well-being at all stages of life. This inequality has many consequences in various areas of life, such as financial insecurity and debt problems, unequal access to care, unsafe home situations (e.g. divorce, foster care, child abuse) or stressful working conditions.

Based on insights from fundamental research, numerous educational programmes, tools and training courses have been developed for policymakers and other professionals in this field. This knowledge is pooled in knowledge centres such as the Leiden University Medical Anthropology Network (LUMAN), the Knowledge Centre Psychology and Economic Behaviour (KCPEG) and the Leiden University Network for Health in Africa (LUNHA) – because our perspective is also global.
