After graduation

As a graduate of Dutch Studies, you will be fluent in Dutch and have a deep understanding of Dutch culture and society. This provides strong preparation for working in international organisations with Dutch connections, in government bodies or NGOs, in Dutch educational programmes in your home country, or for continuing your studies at master’s level.

What are your skills after graduation?

The three-year Dutch Studies programme offers you the opportunity to focus intensely on gaining academic-level Dutch language abilities while acquiring a broad education in Dutch culture, art, history, and society. Because you will live and study in the Netherlands, communicating with native speakers on a daily basis, you will quickly gain fluency – not just in language, but in cultural nuances as well. 

Once you have graduated, you will possess: 

  • Fluency in the Dutch language; 
  • A deep insight into Dutch culture and society; 
  • Knowledge of Dutch history, art and literature; 
  • Academic skills such as conducting research, formulating research questions, evaluating information and thinking critically;
  • Intercultural skills developed in the programme’s international classroom; 
  • General skills, such as communication, presentation, working in a team as well as independently, and self-motivation. 

These skills will prove highly valuable for your future career. 

Your career prospects

Do you want to follow a full academic programme? After obtaining your bachelor’s degree you can continue with a master’s programme. Once you have successfully completed your master’s you will have earned the title Master of Arts (MA). Your master’s diploma will increase your chances of securing an academic-level position.

Humanities Career Event

Each year, the Faculty of Humanities organises a Humanities Career Event. This all-day event is your chance to learn everything you can about how to find the job you want and successfully attain it. The event includes workshops on a wide range of topics as well as opportunities to network with alumni and potential employers and receive tips, information and potential job leads. 

Career Service

The Career Service of Leiden University’s Faculty of Humanities will be pleased to give you personal advice and guidance about internships and jobs, as well as courses and workshops in career planning, job applications and interviews. The advisors can also provide contact details for potential employers. Furthermore, an internship coordinator and career advisor will help you match your interests and abilities with suitable internships and career options. You can contact the Student Career Service during your studies or up to six months after you graduate.
