The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is looking for a

Tutor for the Bachelor Security Studies (1 fte)

Key responsibilities
Tutors are (junior) academic teachers who are responsible for teaching workgroups across the BSc Security Studies (BaSS). Tutors primarily teach workgroups in which students work on their academic and professional skills using content from the lectures, and learn to apply relevant theories and practices. Collaborating with the course lecturers, tutors design workgroups, teach in small groups, provide input on assessment methods and rubrics, and grade assignments. As such, tutors are tasked with helping students develop the following skills and knowledge:

• Academic skills: critical thinking, writing, communication, general research and interdisciplinary skills;
• Professional skills: teamwork, intercultural skills, organisational and leadership skills, and reflection & lifelong learning skills;
• Topical knowledge: theory and practice from relevant disciplines, research methods.

Tutors in the BaSS will have several tasks:

• A tutor prepares and teaches workgroups with students (in a classroom setting and/or online);
• A tutor has a role in the assessment of students, and gives feedback to students;
• A tutor monitors the progress of students and facilitates to advance it;
• A tutor attends all lectures of the courses that are scheduled in conjunction with Skills Labs and Course Labs;
• A tutor follows the tutorial plan of the Skills Labs and the Course Labs that are co-productions of the tutors and senior staff members;
• A tutor is required to attend and participate in all tutor trainings and tutor meetings;
• A tutor is an active member of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs.

Selection criteria
Essential:

• Master’s degree in a relevant field. To complement the knowledge and skillset in our current team we are primarily looking for candidates with a background in Cyber Security, Economics, Governance of Sustainability, Crisis and Security Management, Safety Science/Management or Research Methods;
• Recent graduate or 1-2 years of relevant work experience. This is an early career position;
• Basic knowledge of, and interest in safety and/or security issues and how they are studied within various disciplines;
• Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students with demonstrated didactic and guiding skills;
• Ability to work well in an international team, be flexible, work well under pressure and show initiative;
• Strong proficiency in English (written and verbal);
• Intercultural sensitivity and the ability to integrate different perspectives in your teaching and collaborations;
• Willingness to work towards obtaining University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
• Available full-time. Lectures and workgroups may be scheduled outside of regular office hours.

Desirable:

• Interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary background;
• Experience with teaching and/or mentoring students (using a variety of teaching methods and tools);
• Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills.

Terms and conditions
We offer a fulltime (38 hours per week) appointment for one year. Depending upon funding and performance, the position can be extended to a permanent position after 1 year. Salary range from € 3.226,- to € 5.090, - gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

The start date for the position is 19-AUG-2024. The successful candidates will be expected to be physically present in the Netherlands for the starting date of the contract. The first two weeks of employment will be entirely dedicated to training. Teaching (in-person or hybrid) will take place on our campus in the Hague and the hired candidates will be expected to be physically present on campus for at least 3 days a week.
