More information about Marvin Groen

Research topic

Groen is part of the BioClock consortium and will be researching the effect of artificial light at night on various trophic levels in an ecosystem.

Professional experience

Groen worked as an (urban)ecologist at the Natural History Museum of Rotterdam carrying out surveys on biodiversity, mostly bats, plants and insects. Additionally, his tasks were writing reports for both governmental and commercial clients. He supervised several students with their master’s and bachelor’s theses. And, he was the expert in GIS and statistics within the company.

For five years, Groen has been assisting and teaching in the minor ‘Biodiversity’ as part of the Biology bachelor's programme. The minor includes courses on field ecology and sampling methodology as statistics and GIS. We have several field weeks wherein the students gather field data which they will later in the course analyse. The collected data is also used in the long-term research scheme called the PolderLab.

Besides this, Groen set up a company together with Kevin Groen, his twin brother who also works for the CML. They arrange, produce and present all sorts of nature communication activities, such as excursions, blogs and nature documentaries. And they have written a book, named The Wild Wild East. For more information visit their Instagram page.

Groen did the master's Forest and Nature Conservation at the University of Wageningen and the master's Evolution, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology at Leiden University.
