Research
My research focuses on the academic study and representation of culture, religion, and tradition - specifically in Southeast Asia. It draws upon religious studies, history, philosophy, and comparative science of cultures. Broadly speaking I am interested in how the cultures of Southeast Asia came to be understood and studied from a Western cultural perspective and in the effect of this on Southeast Asian self-reflection. Main topics: the process of conceptualisation of 'Javanese Islam' and 'Burmese Buddhism', alternative descriptions of Southeast Asian traditions.
