Exploring all options during the Master’s Open Day

On March 16th, students from all over the world visited Leiden's Humanities Faculty to explore their options during the Master's Open Day. 'Leiden is a beautiful city, I feel like I could definitely study here.'

Over a thousand visitors attended the presentations of the humanities master’s programmes this year. Especially the area studies were popular, Asian-, Middle Eastern-, Russian- and North American Studies all had full lecture halls.

To help students make the right choice, master's students, study advisers and alumni discussed the options with prospective students during Meet & Greet sessions. What did students visiting the Master's Day have to say?

Aincre Evans (22)

Aincre from Ghana has just finished a BA at the Maastricht University and is now looking for a master in Leiden. ‘I’m looking at Leiden's African Studies programme. The Leiden African Studies Centre has a great body of work and Leiden University has one of the best African Studies programmes in Europe. I have a lot of affinity for my continent and eventually I’m hoping to go into policy development, mostly regarding women’s rights in Africa.’

Jelle de Wolf (25)

Jelle comes from a Dutch programme of applied sciences (Hbo) in media and communication and is looking to deepen his knowledge with a master in journalism. ‘I just went to the presentation of Journalism and New Media and talked to teachers and students during the Meet&Greet and I feel quite positive about this master. I would like to be a journalist in a few years, so I’m hoping this master will be a stepping stone. I still want to look at other options, but I think I will sign up.’

Marguerite Hopmans (22)

Marguerite from Utrecht studies a BA in Social Geography and Urban Planning, but would like to take a different direction for her master. ‘Over the last few years I realised I’m very interested in different cultures and the differences between cultures. Especially the difference between ours and Russian culture. I just talked to people from International Relations but I’m also having a look at Russian and Eurasian Studies and Crisis and Security Management later today. So far I'm positive, Leiden is a beautiful city and I feel like I could definitely study here.’
