Theoretical Linguistics

Studying the underlying principles of the nature of language.

At LUCL, researchers try to understand the nature of human languages by investigating their structural properties. They do so by building a linguistics theory about language structures (utterances, sentences, words, sounds and their building blocks) and use this theory to explain properties of human language, language use, language variation, synchronic and diachronic language change.
