Former PhD candidates
Ludo Juurlink is Professor of Educational Technology in the Natural Sciences at the Faculty of Science, appointed at ICLON. His research interests include the integration of generative artificial intelligence in (higher) education, the use of 3D printing techniques and mobile phones as teaching materials, and chemical subject didactics. Prior to his appointment at ICLON, he was director of the Leiden Learning and Innovation Centre (LLInC). Before that, he worked as a scientist and group leader at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC), where he conducted research into reaction dynamics on metal surfaces. In that role, he was also regularly involved in ICLON activities, including continuing education for science teachers and research in the field of chemistry teaching methodology. PhD, MSc and BSc students conducted research in his laboratory on chemistry (demonstration) practicals and teaching materials for chemistry education.
Ludo comes from Deurne (North Brabant) and graduated from St Willibrord Gymnasium there. After completing a propaedeutic examination in Chemical Technology at Delft University of Technology, he transferred to HKL Tilburg for a teacher training course in Chemistry. During that course, he spent six months at New York University conducting research on semiconductor surfaces. After completing his studies in Tilburg, he went to Tufts University near Boston for doctoral research, where he obtained his PhD on state-selected reactivity of methane on nickel. During a subsequent postdoctoral position in Leiden, he became involved in the development of the Sustainable Molecular Science and Technology programme at Delft University of Technology and Leiden University. This was later merged with the BSc programmes in Chemistry (Leiden) and Chemical Technology (Delft) to form the current Molecular Science & Technology (MST) programme. Ludo started a profile assignment support lab with a Gratama Grant. With grants from the Platform BètaTechniek, this grew into the Junior Science Lab of the Faculty of Science. With successful applications for an LTA grant and a Comenius Leadership grant, he conducted research into the use of a learning app among students at the University across multiple faculties. This resulted in scientific publications and the availability of Wooflash for students and lecturers in Leiden.
Ludo was a member of the University Council for the staff party Universitair Belang for one year.
