Research
How did free agents react to the creation of colonial monopolies by the Scandinavian states in the Early Modern period? This research is part of Dr. Catia Antunes’ ERC-project 'Fighting Monopolies, Defying Empires 1500-1750: a Comparative Overview of Free Agents and Informal Empires in Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire'."
My part in this research will be tackling the early modern (1600-1750) Scandinavian domains overseas. I will focus on the empires Denmark-Norway and Sweden-Finland. These two empires are connected through trade and politics, and even if they may portray a specific type of monopoly of imperial exploitation (chartered monopolies), they had differences, that affected the way they functioned in a global context.
