Since November 2014 Jan de Keijser is working as a Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology.

In 2010, Jan joined the Department of Criminology as an Associate Professor. Since November 2014, he has been a Professor of Criminology at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology. He studied political science at Leiden University. In March 2000, he received his PhD cum laude in social sciences from Leiden University with a dissertation on the significance of theories of punishment in the practice of sentencing.

Research 

His research interests focus on factors that affect the legitimacy of the criminal justice system. This includes research into judicial decision-making processes regarding evidence and sentencing, public perceptions of crime and law enforcement, and the interaction between legal professionals and technical forensic experts. His research involves nearly all (professional) participants in the process (police, public prosecutors, judges, lawyers, experts), as well as public opinion. The research is situated at the intersection of criminal law and social sciences and is characterized by the use and combination of diverse qualitative and quantitative approaches. He has published books and articles in national and international journals on, among other things, expert evidence, evaluation of police reports, the social responsiveness of judges, the gap between judges and society, moral theories of punishment, purposes of punishment, judicial sentencing, and public opinion on punishment.

 

Teaching

His regular courses in the Criminology curriculum are: Introduction to Legal Psychology (Ba1), Prevention and Punishment (Ba3), and Research Skills (Ba3). In addition, he provides education and training at SSR for judges and public prosecutors, as well as for experts in training at the NFI.
