Construction of difference
How to research the construction of difference? What methodology do we need to research the process of categorization?

MSc Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology - Research opportunity
In diversity research, questions are often asked about whether certain groups in the Netherlands ('women', 'Muslims', etcetera) have a disadvantaged position, are treated as equals or feel at home. I would like MSc students to go beyond such questions by researching the process of categorization itself. How are categories constructed, and why do people value certain boundary characteristics? For example, what do people mean by saying they 'feel Dutch' - how do they define 'Dutch-ness'? How and in what way to people categorize others?
I also would encourage MSc-students to reflect on methodologies used in diversity research. How to research the construction of difference? What methodology do we need to research the process of categorization?
