LCDS Research Programme launches new series of grants matchmaking events

On 25 June, The Leiden Centre of Data Science (LCDS) and Luris hosted a interdisciplinary working session. The event focused on matchmaking, brainstorming and planning of grant proposals for a long term funding programme connected to the Dutch Science Agenda.

Research agenda

Regarding long term research funding, 2018 proves to be a promising year for interdisciplinary research. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will run a long term funding programme based on the Dutch Science Agenda (NWA). The programme aims to fund collaborative research related to the 25 routes of the research agenda.

Cross-fertilization

The LCDS Data Science Research Programme of Leiden University is multidisciplinary and connecting par excellence by its university wide programme. It anticipated on the developments by initiating a new series of grant matchmaking events. These events are focused on creating proposals for collaborative research by achieving cross-fertilization between scientific disciplines, in particular by involving Data Science.

The session

On June 25th the Data Science Research Programme and LURIS organised the first grant matchmaking session on the current NWO NWA-ORC call. With over 100 participants the session clearly met an urgent need to jointly identify the possibilities of the call. Attendees could choose between 16 small working groups, divided in two sessions according their interest. Each group was chaired by a domain expert and in addition attendees could talk to advisors of LURIS for one-on-one advice.

With groups focusing on diverse topics ranging from Health care to Quantum to Smart cities, the event reflected the variety of research subjects Leiden University offers and underlined the added value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, the programme provided plenty possibilities for networking: many new connections were made, also within faculties.

Interested?

LCDS and LURIS intend to organise more working sessions on demand, and tailored for specific calls that are of interest for Data Science. If you want to stay informed, please let them know via this link.

Organisers

The Data Science Research Programme (DSRP) is a university wide programme, which aims to advance the state of the art in interdisciplinary Data Science research and to accelerate the use of Data Science methods at all faculties of Leiden University. The programme is associated with the Leiden Centre of Data Science (LCDS). The network of LU data science researchers may very well be a good starting position to build successful consortia.

Luris is the Knowledge Exchange of Leiden University and LUMC. The Grant Development team of Luris helps researchers with identifying suitable funding opportunities and preparing competitive proposals.
