Summer Schools: from human rights to chemical biology
It's been a year of hard work, but maybe you're still hankering to learn more? Check out this year's Summer Schools at Leiden University.
A number of different faculties are organising intensive lecture series on the most diverse subjects. Students, PhD candidates and professionals from inside and outside the University can learn more about their particular field of interest in an ambitious and attractive setting with many international guests. It is also a unique opportunity for Leiden academics to share their knowledge with the world.
Broad choice
This summer participants can choose from a broad range of Summer Schools. We are organising schools on American law, big data, linguistics, organ transplantation and chemical biology. The Schools are open for anyone who is interested, provided they have the right prior education and experience. The deadline for registering and the costs differ per Summer School.

Law
Columbia Summer Program – 4 to 29 July 2016
The Columbia Summer Program is a collaboration between Columbia University (United States) amd the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Every year eminent professors from Columbia University come to Amsterdam or Leiden to talk about the US legal system. The 2016 Summer School will take place in Leiden. You can register until 1 June. Law on the Bosphorus IV – 11 to 21 July (Istanbul)
In this Summer School you will learn how human rights and criminal law are related. The programme is organised in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights (Sweden) and the Law Faculty of Istanbul University. Registration is possible until 1 April. Humanities
Languages and Linguistics - 11 to 22 July
The Faculty of Humanities is organising the annual Summer School in Languages and Linguistics from 11 to 22 July. More information will be available soon on the website.
Science
Modern physics at all scales – 10 to 20 July
Physics today covers such diverse subjects as how the Universe developed to meta materials and biological processes. This Summer School will highlight aspects of all these fields of research, focusing on the master's programme at Leiden University and the research carried out at the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION). Chemical Biology in Health and Disease – 10 to 16 July
This Summer School is organised by the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC). The research carried out at the LIC concentrates on gaining a better understanding of complex biological systems at molecular level with a view to enhancing our knowledge of health and sickness. Honours Academy
Constitutional Concepts and Practice - 24 June to 8 July
Professor Donner, Vice-President of the Council of State and this year's Clevering lecturer, will give an Honours Class on the theme of developing important constitutional concepts, such as democracy, separation of powers and sovereignty, both within the historical confines of the nation state and in terms of the further integration of the European Union. Crises in Biology - Animal Life from the Late Precambrian to the Emergence of Land Life - 30 May to 9 June & 14 to 28 August
This Honours Class, comprising lectures in Leiden and a geological expedition to Normandy, is on the theme of the many biological crises in world history. It will cover such subjects as mass extinctions, the transition from single-cell life to animal life, and the climate and environmental changes that were needed to make life on land possible. Leidern University Medical Center (LUMC)
Leiden Oxford Transplantation Summer school (LOTS) – 3 to 6 July
A Summer School on organ transplantation, intended particularly for bachelor's students in the medial and biomedical sciences. Register before 1 April. For more information, see the Facebook page.
LERU Summer School 2016: Data Stewardship for Scientific Discovery and Innovation – 10 to 15 July
Leiden University is a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). This year the University is organising the annual LERU Summer School. The School prepares participants for the future of complex, data-intensive and multidisciplinary research methods. For more information, see the factsheet.
The Leiden/ESA Astrophysics Programme for Summer Students (LEAPS) – June to August
Within LEAPS, students who are interested in astronomy and astrophysics can carry out a ten-to-twelve-week research project in the summer, in collaboration with a researcher from the Leiden Observatory or ESA. The programme is intended for students who are not working for a PhD. For more information, see the website.

Blended Learning – 25 July to 12 August
During this Summer School participants will learn the strategies and tools that can be used to put blended learning into practice. For more information, see the website.
International Tax Center
International Tax Law – 4 to 22 July
Participants will learn about international tax law. They will be updated on international tax treaties and tax levies on multinational corporations. Register before 1 June. For more information, see the website.
