Theme 'Innovation in teaching and learning'
A special guest at the conference is prof. Eric Mazur, who will present a keynote lecture and will give a workshop. Eric Mazur obtained his Ph.D. at Leiden University and is now a Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University. In addition to his work in optical physics, he has been very active in education. In 1990 he began developing Peer Instruction, a method for teaching large lecture classes interactively. Dr. Mazur's teaching method has developed a large following and has been adopted across many disciplines. After the conference, he will speak at three other Dutch universities (see www.tourdemazur.nl).

Beerend Hierck will open the conference and introduce the members of the Leiden Teacher Academy.
11.15-11.45 Keynote lecture: ‘Teaching global citizenship’

What does it mean to teach “global citizenship”? At Leiden University College, abstract values come to life when students combine the academic study of education systems with hands-on volunteer work in local secondary-school classrooms.

Students and teachers of Leiden University present their experiences with recent innovations in education and formulate their opinion on these innovations.

'I thought I was a good teacher until I discovered my students were just memorizing information rather than learning to understand the material. Who was to blame? The students? The material? I will explain how I came to the agonizing conclusion that the culprit was neither of these. It was my teaching that caused students to fail! I will show how I have adjusted my approach to teaching and how it has improved my students' performance significantly'.'
